Use your cotton crocheted doilies as part of your quilting projects. These doilies can be used in the middle of each stitching square, as appliqué or as edging. Keeping reproductions of 17th-century fabric prints in your quilting fabric is an additional opportunity to create a unique quilt.

In my youth, doilies were often used:

  • Resting on armchair
  • Draped over the backrest of chairs and sofas
  • Used on chimney liners to highlight candlesticks and other trifles
  • Located on end tables that point out peanut and candy dishes
  • Table lamps and silver bowls stand on doilies

Can you remember how your mother or grandmother spent hours crocheting these top mats?

I rarely see these doilies anymore. But I've noticed that quilters use them in their tapestries, throws, and comforters.

Doilies can be found at file exchanges, flea markets, flea markets and antique shops. Here is a word of caution; Think carefully before sewing these doilies together. If the doilies you want to use are classified as collectibles or antiques; proceed with caution.

The value of your doily determines how you can use it when quilting. When you apply these lace decorations to your quilting fabric, both remain as souvenirs.

Doilies are usually round, but are also crocheted in rectangular, oval and square shapes. Do your best not to cut the doilies. Cut your fabric according to the size and shape of the doily.

These lace decoration scarves were crocheted in cotton in a perforated pattern or with holes that showed the upper shell with its curtain and protected the furniture from scratches from metal shells. These cotton beauties are perfect for our cotton quilts.

You may have designs bordered with roses, popcorn or ruffles.

  • The roses would add interest.
  • The popcorn pattern would add texture
  • Ruffles can add a thicker dimension to your quilting project.

I just had a flashback. Even as a young child, I remember that my mother had strengthened a ruffled doily that was an outer skirt over a satin skirt with a beautiful slender doll in a crocheted picture hat in the middle of this doily skirt.

If you fill your application doily in suitable areas, you will be surprised with wonderful results. It was also common to draw pretty ribbons through the open areas of these crocheted beauties. This would also give your quilt design an unusual appeal.
