I have to admit something. I struggled with the teacher's oath when I started my Kundalini yoga teacher training. When I first heard it, I leaned up. What do you mean, I am not a woman? If I'm not a person, what am I? And if I'm not myself, who am I then? I did not understand it and it confused me immensely. Who told me that I am not me? Can you say "resistance"? How about a good start?
In this article I explain what the teacher's oath means and what it means to me compared to my first impression. I will also address the key ethical responsibilities that a KY teacher has in terms of serving students, personal behavior, and roles. And finally, I will bring in my relationship with the teachings and source of the teachings.
Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa of the Golden Bridge in Los Angeles says that "as a Kundalini Yoga teacher, [we] take that [Teacher's] Oath. There is a precedent for why we are there and what we deliver: these sacred teachings Our goal is to leave the student to himself and not to the teacher. We are here to inspire the students. "
How do I stand to The Teacher's Oath now? It's about raising humanity! Yogi Bhajan has given the teacher's oath to remind him to keep our ego out of the classroom and to always answer with what is in the best interests of the student. He tries to teach us "to shine the soul of the disciple", not to shine our own ego. It's about being an ambassador of the teachings; be a vehicle and let it flow. The teacher's reminder reminds us to be the teacher and to lift the soul of every disciple.
Hand in hand with the teacher's oath are the ethical duties of a KY teacher. These responsibilities are threefold. First, there is ethical responsibility with regard to service. As a KY teacher, it is important to maintain the purity of the teachings and teach them selflessly. It is the responsibility of the teacher to connect the students with the flow of teachings and to sensitize them to the consciousness of the infinite in them.
Second, there is ethical responsibility for personal behavior. This is about following the conversation and leading by example. It is also about referring to the mind, the soul and the nature of a person, not to his ego. In addition, the teacher-student relationships should remain professional. Personal behavior must be of the highest quality, always based on a place of deep concern, respect and concern for others.
The third and final piece is ethical responsibility in relation to the role. As a KY teacher, you must let go of your identification with your own success or failure. In this role, a KY teacher must identify with "being a teacher" as an infinite task. It's about paying attention to the students (skill levels, never being harassing, respecting all belief systems, and maintaining trust). In terms of role as a KY teacher, you choose right rather than wrong, ethics rather than comfort. These are the decisions that measure your life (not just your teaching experience). Travel on the path of integrity ... because there is never the wrong time to do the right thing.
To complete this discussion, it is important to outline my relationship to the teachings and source of the teachings.
My relationship to the teachings is a relationship of respect, consideration, love, appreciation, gratitude and service, always and at all times, regardless of my particular current feelings and opinions, because that is the attitude that I must have to my essence.
My relationship to the source of the teachings was difficult in the beginning. As a pure marksman, I am often reluctant to be unhappy in regimental situations, as I tend to get bored and restless, and I also decline authority. To come to this kind of spiritual teaching based on the tradition of a guru transmitting wisdom was an interesting decision. I know that people usually surrender to the guru to show the way until they have the discipline of pure teaching. Everything became great when I started trusting my teacher and indulging in the experience. Now KY is a proven step-by-step system to go my own way. It's all love ... pure love. I give my ego to my soul. I came to explore the knowledge and did not know that the knowledge would start to explore me. It was about the wisdom of giving in to the flow of life instead of facing it.
I understand it now ... as Mark Ciaburri claims, "My whole being is moving in the direction of these teachings, I love what I learn and unlearn."
