Emotions are the feelings or sensations of a person in relation to others under different circumstances. Positive state of emotional stability helps to express the correct behavior and attitudes of the personality. The imbalance of emotional states causes more and more suffering, leading to mental distractions, pain and anxiety. The sage Patanajli explains that the five sufferings are the fundamental causes of human misery, which are powerful enough to disturb the nature of our emotions as well.

PYS 1.33 says

The spirit of friendship should be entertained with those who have experienced happiness, a sense of compassion towards those in need, a spirit of goodwill toward those who are on the path of virtue and indifference to vice. This kind of approach helps to create purity of mind and emotions. The purified mind attains a single point, always attaining serenity.
