Yoga is becoming increasingly popular in the Western world today. The number of places where yoga classes are held is increasing and there are a plethora of different types of yoga. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and much more, confusion can easily occur

The article will help you to understand the difference between the most popular types of yoga, so you can choose which type is best for you.

Hatha Yoga - in Sanskrit (an old classical language of India) "Ha" means "sun" and "tha" means "moon". This type of yoga is a reliably slow, gentle type of yoga and is a good starting point if you are not yet a newcomer to yoga and do not know any of the asanas (poses). Like all types of yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unify mind, body and soul.

Ashtanga Yoga - that is the kind of yoga that I practice regularly and that in Sanskrit means "eight limbs". It's a fast-moving, intense yoga style based on a progressive series of asanas synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga yoga can be physically exhausting if you are constantly moving from one asana to the next. You will find that it improves your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength.

Power Yoga - This is a western interpretation of yoga based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class does not necessarily follow the exact sequence of poses Ashtanga Yoga does, but it involves practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga - This type of yoga is based on the teachings of BKS Igengar and focuses on the correct alignment and shape of the body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, the emphasis is on keeping each pose for a long period rather than moving consistently from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses aids such as blocks and straps to bring the body into various poses.

Vinyasa Yoga - Vinyasa means breath-synchronous movement and is another fast-paced type of yoga that focuses on breathing. An exercise usually starts with sun salutations and leads to a more intense stretching. During training, each pose is counterbalanced with a counter pose.

Bikram Yoga - also known as "hot yoga" - is practiced in a heated to 105 degrees room with a humidity of about 40%. Normally, during a Bikram yoga class, a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced, and the hot temperature helps to relax the muscles. Due to the high temperature, most people sweat a lot during class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins.

If you are new to yoga or have never done yoga before, I suggest you try a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best.

Remember, there is no rule that says you have to stick to some kind of yoga. I like Ashtanga Yoga the most, but I also occasionally go to Iyengar and Hatha Yoga classes for some change.
