Years of sitting in chairs and cars left most of us with chronic tightness in their inner thighs. How can we release this tension and free our hips and groins? This is necessary in order to enjoy the everyday life and also to do many yoga poses, especially the standing poses.
Badda Konasana (pronounced BUD the Cone AAH sun uh) is a classic imprisoned pose that solves the tightness in our hips and groin. It also gives us the opportunity to center ourselves. As we sit up, open our hips, lower our heads, and bring our soles together, we become focused and calm.
Baddha means bound and kona means angle, so this is the bound angular attitude. It is sometimes called cobbler posture because this is the position shoemakers take in India.
This deceptively simple pose has many other benefits:
It is good for the health of the prostate in men and the lower reproductive system in women. For this effect, hold the pose for at least five minutes, preferably with your back against a wall. It is interesting to note that Indian shoemakers are unique in that they have no prostate problems. This pose also relieves sexual tension and frustration.
o In women, this pose relieves menstrual cramps and symptoms of menopause. Regular exercise in the second and third trimester of pregnancy reduces discomfort at birth.
o It calms the lower abdominal organs and releases tensions in the bladder. It helps the excretory system to remove waste from the body.
o The pelvis is the root of the emotions. So when we open the bars, we allow the expression of emotions. Most creativity comes from an emotional place, not a mental place. By opening the foundation of emotions, we let creativity flow more freely.
If you have difficulty practicing these or other yoga postures, remember the following story: Three Men Traveling on Camels Through a Desert. As the sky darkened, a booming voice from the clouds commanded, "Get off your camels and fill your pockets with stones!" The men were tired after a long day of travel and did not want to bury themselves and their camels. So they reluctantly put some stones in their sacks. Then they went on to the camp, put up their tents and went to sleep.
In the morning, the men opened the leather bags and discovered that the stones had been turned into diamonds during the night. The men were happy and sad at the same time. They were glad that they had put some stones in their bags, but excuse that they had not put any more in them. It is the same with yoga. When you go through life, traveling in darkness and deserts, when the morning comes and you have to face the day, you will be glad that you have done everything you have practiced, and you are sorry that you are not have done more.
